Distant Suns 25th Anniversary

25 years ago, while working at the NASA Ames Research Centre, I got the idea to create an astronomy program for computer users. It started out as a 17 line BASIC program and I've been polishing it up ever since.

Distant Suns celebrates 50th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's epic ride with a free app

It was 50 years ago today that the son of a Russian farmer rocketed into space and became the first man to orbit the earth. Yuri Gagarin's 108 minute trip in his Vostok spacecraft ushered in the era of manned space flight

To celebrate the event, Distant Suns 2 for the iPhone and iPod touch is free today only. The app is a pretty complete star map, with 130,000 stars, 88 constellations and the Messier catalog of galaxies, nebula and star clusters.

Distant Suns2 Unleashes The Galaxy At Your Fingertips

If you are an astronomer, then Distant Suns2 is a fantastic application for all types of star gazers. No matter what part of the sky that you are looking at you can find out what you want to know about the stars and the sky using different icons at the bottom of the app. This can help beginners to get their bearings in the night sky. The interface is user friendly. If you have 3G, then this app will go quite a bit further with what it will offer as far as astronomy goes.

Award winning astronomy package Distant Suns written by Mike Smithwick of First Light Software is now available at the iTunes AppStore.
Distant Suns will turn your iPhone and iPod touch into a handheld planetarium. It sports a database of thousands of stars, all 88 constellations and the "Messier" catalogue of deep-sky objects complete with dozens of photos from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. Using the iPhone's touch screen, users can scroll around the sky and find out what constellations or planets they are looking at with merely the swipe of a finger. This maintains its reputation as one of the most easy to use programs of its type, and one of the most realistic.

Distant Suns - Desktop Planetarium
version 6.0

This desktop planetarium includes movies of Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon and the launch of Apollo 11. You can also fly in 3D over the surface of Mars, take a trip to Pluto or a galaxy far away. Distant Suns has more than 16 million stars in the star catalogue. You can see the night sky at the time you were born, print out star charts, create AVI movie sequences, look down on our solar system from outer places or use the 3D navigator. Distant Suns uses telescope plugins, so you may also use the program to find celestial bodies in the night sky using your favourite telescope. Distant Suns can be set up to recognize your home town and the real landscape profiles can be selected to show you far away places.
