More meteors fell during 2011's Draconid shower

The Draconid meteor shower will peak Sunday. The best viewing is before the moon rises at about 12:30 a.m. Monday. The Draconids seem to emanate from the head of Draco, The Dragon, but they can appear anywhere in the sky, moving away from the radiant point.

Title: Airborne observation of 2011 Draconids meteor outburst: the Italian mission
Authors: Costantino Sigismondi

The outburst of 8 October 2011 of Draconids meteors has been observed visually onboard of Alitalia AZ790 flight. The enhanced zenithal hourly rate around ZHR=300 from 19 UT to 21:50 UT has been observed over central Asia. The data and the method of analysis are described and compared with other observations made worldwide.

Watching the dragon spit fire

This video catches the moment when a Draconid meteor exploded in Earth's atmosphere earlier this month. The dramatic footage comes from a campaign to observe this important meteor shower using aircraft to beat the clouds.
On the evening of Saturday 8 October, Earth plunged through a stream of dust and rocks that had been expelled into space by the comet Giacobini-Zinner. The resultant meteor shower lit the skies over Europe with shooting stars.

Where clear skies allowed, Finns were treated to a shower of stars on Saturday night. At its peak, the night's Draconids meteor shower peppered the heavens with up to 300 "falling stars" an hour.
Similar displays of meteors were seen in 1933 and 1946. The Finnish stargazers' group Ursa says that the display seen Saturday night and in the early hours of Sunday may be the last ever from this particular meteor swarm.

This years Draconid meteor shower is predicted to be particularly strong, as the earth passes through a dense dust stream left by an old passage of comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner.
An outburst, which may produce a Zenithal Hourly Rate (ZHR) of 750, is predicted to occur between 17:00 and 18:00 UT, 8th October 2011. The peak is expected to occur over Europe and the Middle east.
The Draconids are best placed for observers in the Northern Hemisphere.
The radiant point for the Draconid meteor shower coincides with the head of the constellation Draco (the Dragon) in the northern sky, (Draco is in the same vicinity as the North star).

The moon is full on the 12th October, 2011, and may interfere.
