Camp Verde Meteorite

The so-called Camp Verde and Bloody Basin meteorites are transported specimens from the Meteor Crater impact site. Both were carried some sixty to eighty miles southwest of the crater. The Camp Verde Meteorite, which weighs over one-hundred and thirty pounds, was found on top of a mesa in the corner of an ancient dwelling. The meteorite had been wrapped in feather and cloth and placed on a stone alter. The Bloody Basin meteorite, which weighs over twelve pounds, was found in connection to a burial site. In another example, roughly thirty-five miles to the west-northwest of the Meteor Crater impact site along old Route 66 is the little town of Winona.

With great difficulty, he wrestled the object from its grave, pulled back the delicate feather blanket and found himself gazing at a two-foot long, one-foot wide, five-inch thick, 135-pound, oddly-shaped hunk of rusting rock.
Dawson had an idea of what he was looking at, but it was not until several months later, after it was tested, that he knew for sure. The object so delicately wrapped and reverently placed in the stone cyst was a nickel-iron meteorite, or what meteorite collectors call simply, an iron.

On this travel adventure I experienced the past, present and future as I visited one of the most extraordinary places on earth: The Meteor Crater. It lies 35 miles east of Flagstaff and 20 miles west of Winslow, Arizona.
Between 1963 and the late 1970s, astronauts scheduled for Apollo missions to the moon were trained at Meteor Crater because of its similarity to craters on the moons surface. The astronauts learned to make their way around a crater environment and to collect rocks ejected from a crater that would provide clues to the underground composition of the moon.

Arizona is known as "the Grand Canyon state" and with good reason. The awe-inspiring beauty of the famous Grand Canyon is matched only by its unbelievable enormity. For millions of years the Colorado River has been carving the mile-deep canyon, and it's not finished yet.
But the state has another huge hole in the ground which, while not as large and well-known, is impressive in its own right - and it was blasted out in a matter of seconds. Some 50,000 years ago Earth was impacted by a large piece of solar system debris, resulting in what is popularly called Meteor Crater.

Basket meteorite

It was never just any meteorite. Unlike most, this one had a name.
The "Basket" meteorite, which screamed to Earth 50,000 years ago, is shaped a bit like a basket with a handle.
It was stolen from Meteor Crater east of Flagstaff back in August 1968.
