Dynamic Structures is using Autodesk Inventor software and IMAGINiT Technologies to design an astronomical observatory which will house the Thirty Metre Telescope (TMT).
The Autodesk reseller and training partner has helped Dynamic Structures validate design functionality and catch errors before anything is built.
It has also reduced the time required to create and revise part and assembly drawings by more than 20 percent, helping the TMT project to stay on schedule.

Large, passionate turnout for TMT EIS in Hilo
The Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Thirty Meter Telescope project, which is considering the summit of Mauna Kea as a location, gathered community input Tuesday night in Hilo's Keaukaha section.

Mauna Kea has some of the best atmospheric conditions in the world to build a proposed Thirty Meter Telescope, but a desert mountain in Chile is also in competition for the $1 billion facility, project officials say.
Officials began the first steps yesterday in writing an environmental impact statement that would detail the effects of putting the enormous instrument on a sloping plain, about 500 feet lower than the summit of Mauna Kea.

Astronomers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and their colleagues used a rare cosmic alignment and modern adaptive optics to image a distant galaxy with similar exquisite resolution promised by the future Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). This achievement provided detailed insight into the nature of a young star-forming galaxy as it appeared only two billion years after the Big Bang, and determined how that galaxy may eventually evolve to become a system like our own Milky Way.

Big Island residents have begun voicing concerns about a proposed 30-meter telescope atop Mauna Kea.
Last night saw the first of seven public scoping meetings to gather input ahead of an environmental impact statement.

The backers of the world's biggest optical/infrared telescope would rather have people know it as the world's greatest telescope.
Either moniker would be right, since the proposed Thirty Meter Telescope would give astronomers the deepest, clearest view into the universe. With nine times the light-gathering capacity of either Keck telescope, and a resolving power 12 times that of the Hubble Space Telescope, the TMT promises to reinvent man's view of the cosmos and search for Earth-like planets around other stars.

U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye is pressing to have a huge new telescope project built on Mauna Kea that is almost certain to be controversial among Native Hawaiians. But he is also proposing steps such as scholarships for Hawaiian students as part of an initiative to garner public support for the project.
The proposed $1 billion Thirty-Meter Telescope is considered by some to be critical to maintaining Hawai'i's status as a world-class hub for high-tech research and development in astronomy. Inouye echoed that view in a May 8 letter to University of Hawai'i President David McClain.

The California Institute of Technology and the University of California have received a $200 million commitment over nine years from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation toward the further development and construction of the Thirty-Meter Telescope (TMT). Funding under this commitment will be shared equally between the two universities, with matching gifts from the two institutions expected to bring the total to $300 million. When built, TMT will be the largest telescope in the world.

The detailed design for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) developed by a U.S.-Canadian team is capable of delivering on the full promise of its enormous light-collecting area, according to the findings of an independent panel of experts.
With the TMT, astronomers will be able to analyse the light from the first stars born after the Big Bang, directly observe the formation and evolution of galaxies, see planets around nearby stars, and make observations that test fundamental laws of physics.

"The successful completion of our conceptual design review means that the TMT has a strong science vision, good technical requirements, a thoroughly reviewed design, and a powerful team to carry our work forward" - Gary Sanders, Project Manager.

Now in detailed design, the TMT is a concept for the world's largest telescope. It consists of a primary mirror with 738 individual 1.2-meter segments that span 30 meters in total, three times the effective diameter of the current largest telescopes. All of the segments will be under exquisite computer control so that they work together as a single mirror.
