Black holes and warped space: New UK telescope shows off first images

This dramatic image is the first to be produced by e-MERLIN, a powerful new array of radio telescopes linked across the UK.
Spearheaded by the University of Manchester's Jodrell Bank Observatory and funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council, the e-MERLIN telescope will allow astronomers to address key questions relating to the origin and evolution of galaxies, stars and planets.
To demonstrate its capabilities, University of Manchester astronomers turned the new telescope array toward the 'Double Quasar'. This enigmatic object, first discovered by Jodrell Bank, is a famous example of Einsteins theory of gravity in action.

Giant jet of gas caught on radio telescope

This is the incredible image of a massive jet of gas and plasma spewing out of a black hole over nine billion light years away.
The ultra-hot plasma and gas was spotted by astronomers, at Cambridge University and around the UK, who have perfected the use of radio waves to create images of the outer reaches of space.
Scientists used e-MERLIN, a network of seven satellite dishes in England, including some at Cambridge University, that form a 217km wide telescope.

UK Observatory seeks Indian solution to signal noise

Dr Srikanta Pal, the Indian scientist who rectified the problem of satellite signals interfering with the observation of the universe by the Green Band Telescope (GBT) in the US, the world's largest, is working to rectify a similar problem in the Jodrell Bank Observatory in the UK.

To celebrate their new best-of album, The Places Between, Doves play a special gig at Jodrell Bank observatory

It's not quite what Sir Bernard Lovell had in mind when he established Jodrell Bank observatory in the aftermath of the second world war. Lovell was primarily concerned with investigating cosmic rays, and the observatory has since played a key role in the research of meteors, quasars and pulsars. But last year Doves, who have a love affair with Jodrell Bank that stretches back over three decades - to when they visited the site on a school trip - came up with a slightly more rock'n'roll suggestion.

Jodrell Bank observatory to receive multi-million pound overhaul

Scientists at Macclesfield's iconic eye to the skies, in Cheshire, believe the cutting edge education and visitor complex can inspire the next influx of pioneers.
The plans - endorsed by the telescope's designer Sir Bernard Lovell - include a 'space garden' which would be unique in the UK, and a 'space pavilion' including education pods and exhibition space.
