The F-1 rocket engine is still a modern wonder - one and a half million pounds of thrust, 32 million horsepower, and burning 6,000 pounds of rocket grade kerosene and liquid oxygen every second. On July 16, 1969, the world watched as five particular F-1 engines fired in concert, beginning the historic Apollo 11 mission. Those five F-1s burned for just a few minutes, and then plunged back to Earth into the Atlantic Ocean, just as NASA planned.

On this day, in 1969, Apollo 11 went into Moon orbit. The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It passed behind the Moon and fired its service propulsion engine to enter lunar orbit. It was the fifth human spaceflight of Project Apollo and the third human voyage to the Moon.

The Apollo 11 space flight landed the first humans on Earth's Moon  on July 20, 1969. The mission, carried out by the United States, is considered a major accomplishment in human exploration and represented a victory by the U.S. in the Cold War  Space Race with the Soviet Union.
Launched from Florida on July 16, the third lunar mission of NASA's Apollo Program (and the first G-type mission) was crewed by Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr.
