January 31, 1961 : Ham the Chimp, a 17 kg male, was rocketed into space aboard Mercury-Redstone 2, in a test of the Project Mercury capsule. His successful 16½-minute flight demonstrated to American NASA officials that the capsule could safely carry human astronauts into space
