An ancient boulder which has stood on Newbiggin beach for hundreds of years and once featured on a cartoon postcard for the village has been saved from rising sand levels. The origins of the Hunkleton Stone, which lay on the beach close to the former Middle Shelter, is a mystery to many.
Some believe it may have been deposited by a glacier during the ice age while others say it is a boulder emanating from Newbiggin Colliery and founded down to the coal seams.
