Title: Virtual Laboratories and Virtual Worlds

Since we cannot put stars in a laboratory, astrophysicists had to wait till the invention of computers before becoming laboratory scientists. For half a century now, we have been conducting experiments in our virtual laboratories. However, we ourselves have remained behind the keyboard, with the screen of the monitor separating us from the world we are simulating. Recently, 3D on-line technology, developed first for games but now deployed in virtual worlds like Second Life, is beginning to make it possible for astrophysicists to enter their virtual labs themselves, in virtual form as avatars. This has several advantages, from new possibilities to explore the results of the simulations to a shared presence in a virtual lab with remote collaborators on different continents. I will report my experiences with the use of Qwaq Forums, a virtual world developed by a new company .

Social-networking site Bebo Inc. said Tuesday it will launch a Microsoft-powered instant-messaging program this autumn.

Social networking site Bebo, as of July 2007,  has become the most visited site of its kind in the UK.
The figures, released by comScore, show the site attracting 10.6 million unique visitors that month (an increase of 63 per cent from the start of the year) with MySpace.com coming in second with 10.1 million visitors for the same period (an increase of 25 per cent over the same time).
Facebook only had  7.6 million unique visitors in July 2007 (however it did have a larger growth pattern).

People who use internet networking sites are being warned that they could be at risk of identity theft.
Credit information group Equifax said members of sites such as MySpace, Bebo and Facebook may be putting too many details about themselves online.
It said fraudsters could use these details to steal someone's identity and apply for credit and benefits.
About 80,000 people in the UK were victims of identity theft last year, at a cost to the economy of £1.5bn.

IMVU is a graphical instant messaging client (3D chat) with more than 7 million users.[1] Currently, it is in public beta, and has been available since 2004-09-18.[2] It is developed by IMVU, Inc., founded by Will Harvey, a video game developer and founder of There. According to the IMVU site, the 3D chat service is growing faster than MySpace.
