USS Nimitz For earlier generations of Indians, the idea of a US aircraft carrier is the idea of the enemy. Think of 1971, the USS enterprise sent in to the Bay of Bengal to deliver a warning to the Indian government as it was close to winning the 1971 war with Pakistan. However, this time when the Nimitz anchors off Chennai harbour on Sunday it will be in a friendly port. But the fact that this ship is the world's largest nuclear powered super carrier means that the historic port of call - a first for a US warship in India - is not without controversy. The Left particularly has been the loudest in their opposition to a nuclear weapons capable warship anchoring in Indian waters.
