A large mushroom cloud was formed by an explosion at a gas pipeline beside the city of St Petersburg in north-west Russia.
"This will not affect supplies to Russian or foreign consumers of Russian natural gas in any way" - Sergei Gustov, head of Gazprom's local subsidiary Peterbuggaz.
