Sierra County commissioners Thursday approved a resolution allowing the county manager to work toward a spaceport tax district, an entity that must be in place under state law to spend any spaceport tax dollars.
"Our resolution is to take preliminary steps toward forming a tax district" - Walter Armijo, Sierra County Commissioner.
Three workers were killed and three others were badly hurt Thursday afternoon in an explosion on the edge of Kern County's Mojave airport during the test of a propellant system for a pioneering private spaceship. The blast occurred at a private test site run by Scaled Composites, a company founded by high-profile aviation entrepreneur Burt Rutan.

Three people have been killed in an explosion during a test of rocket systems to be used in Richard Branson's proposed space tourism ventures. The blast, shortly after 2:30pm yesterday (10.30pm UK time), happened during testing work on a rocket motor for SpaceShipTwo, which is being designed and built by Scaled for Mr Branson's proposed Virgin Galactic space tourism venture. 29 Eyewitness News has learned that two people have been killed and four others have suffered major injuries in an explosion at Scaled Composites at the Mojave Airport and Space Port. It happened about 2:45 p.m. Kern County Fire Department says a rocket carrying a non-noxious oxide exploded. Three air ambulances are being flown to the airport to take the injured to hospitals.
