Seafloor geologists create map of Cape Cod Bay
From protecting fisheries to determining whether an offshore wind farm is feasible, the need for accurate geologic maps of the seafloor has become a priority, according to state and federal scientists.
A team of scientists from the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management and the U.S. Geological Survey spent 10 weeks sampling and mapping the seafloor of western Cape Cod Bay. It is the most recent portion of a larger, $3.5 million joint venture between the state and federal government that has already detailed 500 square miles of the ocean bottom from the New Hampshire border to Nantasket Beach.
