Title: Mapping lunar surface chemistry: new prospects with the Chandrayaan-2 Large Area Soft x-ray Spectrometer (CLASS)
Authors: S. Narendranath, P.S. Athiray, P. Sreekumar, V. Radhakrishnaa, A. Tyagi, B.J. Kellett, the CLASS team

Surface chemistry of airless bodies in the solar system can be derived from remote x-ray spectral measurements from an orbiting spacecraft. X- rays from planetary surfaces are excited primarily by solar x-rays. Several experiments in the past have used this technique of x-ray fluorescence for deriving abundances of the major rock forming elements. The Chandrayaan- 2 orbiter carries an x-ray fluorescence experiment named CLASS that is designed based on results from its predecessor C1XS flown on Chandrayaan-1. We discuss the new aspects of lunar science that can be potentially achieved with CLASS.

Chandrayaan-2: India to go it alone

India has decided to go it alone in its second lunar mission, the Chandrayaan-2, which was originally proposed as an Indo-Russian venture.
This was disclosed here on Monday by S.V.S. Murty of the Planetary Exploration Group of the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), an institution under the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) here.

Chandrayaan-2 may miss the scheduled 2013 takeoff date

If the estimates of space experts are anything to go by, Indias tryst with moon, Chandrayaan-2, may not happen as scheduled in 2013. Prime reason, cited by those in the know, is countrys inability to perfect the cryogenic engine technology.

Solar cycle 24 could singe Chandrayaan-2

India's first unmanned mission to Moon, Chandrayaan-1, may have been successful in playing a pivotal role while making the breakthrough discovery of water on the lunar surface. But the way the intended two-year Moon-orbiting mission was aborted after just 312 days due to intense solar radiation roasting its electronic panels and abruptly stopping data relay, is worrying Indian space scientists about the fate of their second unmanned touch-down lunar mission, Chandrayaan-2, scheduled to be launched in September 2013.

India's first unmanned moon mission, Chandrayaan-1, may have been a huge success, but its 2013 sequel, Chandrayaan-2, has no space for any foreign payloads. This means that Chandrayaan-2 is likely to be an almost all-Indian payload with just the lander being Russia-made.
The Rs425 crore Chandrayaan-2 mission is envisaged to have an India-made orbiter that would revolve around Moon and a Russia-made lander (carrying an Indian rover) which would touch down to allow the rover to carry out exploratory and scientific work on the lunar surface.

Despite technical snags in the indigenous cryogenic engine that powered the Geo-stationary Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV, which was flight-tested in April, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is expected to launch Chandrayaan-2 on an indigenous cryogenic engine on schedule by 2013, ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan said here on Tuesday.

Chandrayaan-2 to have Russian-made lander

Russia will make the lander for Chandrayaan- 2, which will ferry the rover to be built by the Indian Space Research Organisation, said M Annadurai, project director of the Chandrayaan-1 and 2 missions.
This is a part of the joint programme between the ISRO and the Russian space agency.
