NASAs EO-1 satellite captured this image of the small volcanic island, Jebel at Tair, releasing a volcanic plume on November 8, 2007. In this Advanced Land Imager (ALI) image, a white volcanic plume streams from the summit. Evidence of earlier lava flows appears as dark stains on the volcanos slopes.

The Aqua satellite captured this image of the volcanic island on October 1, 2007.
Haze seen over the ocean is probably a combination of ash and "vog" - volcanic smog that arises from the mixture of sulphur dioxide, oxygen, and moisture under the light of the Sun.

A volcano on a Yemeni island in the Red Sea was spewing a deadly mix of lava and ash for the third straight day on Tuesday, after erupting for the first time since the 19th century.
Yemeni authorities said three soldiers had been killed during the eruption on the island of Jabal al-Tair, home to a garrison of 50 soldiers, and that five others were missing.
The garrison had been evacuated after the eruption of the 1,200 metre-high  volcano, which began on Sunday at 12:00 noon (10:00 GMT).

A volcano has erupted on a tiny island off the coast of Yemen, spewing lava and ash hundreds of feet into the air, a Canadian naval vessel near the island in the Red Sea reported Sunday. There were no reports of deaths, but at least nine people were missing.

The tiny oval island, Jabal al-Tair (Bird Mountain), is about two miles wide and is one of a number of volcanoes at the southern end of the Red Sea.
The island is unpopulated but military installations used for naval control and observation were set-up on the island.
The eruption on Sunday evening caused a landslide that collapsed the western part of the island.

A search for survivors is under way after a volcano erupted on a Red Sea island near Yemen.
The western part of the tiny al-Tair island, used as a military base, collapsed following the eruption, Yemen's defence ministry said.
Coastguards and a Canadian frigate are searching for nine Yemeni soldiers based on the island.
