Volcano Erupts in Costa Rica, Shuts Down Airport

Costa Rica's Turrialba Volcano erupted early Monday, lighting up the night sky. According to Costa Rica's volcano and seismology observatory, a second eruption occurred later that same morning, sending ash and smoke some 13,000 feet into the air.

Costa Rica has issued an emergency alert after ash from an erupting volcano reached the capital and beyond. Turrialba volcano, some 50km east of San Jose, began rumbling and producing seismic activity on Wednesday night.

Turrialba volcano is acting up lately, according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori).
On Wednesday, a little before 3 p.m., the volcano jettisoned water vapor, ash and gas into the air. Nearby residents reported seeing towering clouds that showered ash on several communities, according to an Ovsicori report.

Crack At Turrialbla Volcano Getting Larger

Upon closer inspection, experts of the Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) say that the enormous crater of the Turrialba volcano has gotten larger following last week's activity, which will in turn cause landslides within the crater, which in turn could mean more eruptions.

Major Eruption Of Turrialba Volcano Not Likely, Experts Say

Although experts discard any major eruption of the Turrialba volcano, strict security measures around the volcano are being maintained. Volcanologists have been evaluating the condition of the volcano and the crater since it began spewing ash earlier this week.
The experts say that several other craters have formed inside the cone of the volcano. These craters are inside the major active crater and are responsible for the release of gas and ash.
