Title: Enhancing the Google imagery using a wavelet filter
Authors: Amelia Carolina Sparavigna

In some previous papers we proposed the use of free software for a processing of the Google satellite imagery. Here we discuss the use of a wavelet filter for the same purposes. This filter is a tool included in a freely downloadable software (Iris), well-known for the processing of astronomical images. Combining the image obtained after applying the wavelet filter, with an image created with Gimp and AstroFracTool, the visibility of the landforms, as obtained from Google Maps, is strongly increased. Among several possible examples, we proposed a crater, a paleochannel and the Great Bend of the Nile.

In a new research, archaeologists have discovered about 300 strange geoglyphs in the Amazon rainforest.
The geoglyphs, which are large geometric designs carved into the ground, are believed to have been sculpted by ancient people from the Amazon region around 700 years ago, though their purpose is still unknown.

Nazcas' destruction of forests caused downfall
Archaeologists examining the remains of the Nazca, who once flourished in the valleys of south coastal Peru, discovered a sequence of human-induced events which led to their ''catastrophic'' collapse around 500 AD.
The Nazca civilisation, noted for creating vast patterns in the desert that can only be seen from the air, disappeared partly because it damaged the fragile ecosystem that held it in place, a study found.

Everyone here, it seems, has a theory about the Nasca Lines.
The mysterious markings on the desert floor are a massive astronomical calendar. That's a popular one.
Or maybe they point to hidden reserves of water, the source of life in the desert.
Then there's my favourite: UFO landing site. Forty years ago, Danish writer Erich Von Daniken popularised that theory with his best-selling book Chariots of the Gods?
Now, strapped into a four-passenger Cessna circling over a figure called the astronaut, I'm not sure what to think. One of its hands points to the sky, another to the ground. His owlish eyes stare into mine.
Look at me, the 1,500-year-old seems to say. Can you solve my mystery?

The Nazca Lines are a series of geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert, a high arid plateau that stretches 53 miles or more than 80 kilometres between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana in Peru. They were created by the Nazca culture between 200 BC and AD 700. There are hundreds of individual figures, ranging in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, fishes, sharks, llamas and lizards.
