MSG-4, Europes latest weather satellite, delivers first image

Today, the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager instrument on MSG-4 captured its first image of Earth. This demonstrates that Europes latest geostationary weather satellite, launched on 15 July, is performing well and is on its way to becoming fully operational when needed after six months of commissioning.

Europe's MSG-4 weather satellite delivered into orbit

The last weather satellite in Europe's highly successful Meteosat Second Generation series lifted off on an Ariane 5 launcher at 21:42 GMT (23:42 CEST) on 15 July from Europes Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

MSG-4 soon to be launched

After the launch of MSG-3 in 2012, the fourth and final satellite of the Meteosat Second Generation missions is ready for launch. Like its precursors, the MSG-4 satellite will be launched on top of an Ariane 5 rocket from the Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. With the other MSG satellites still operational, MSG-4 will be put into 'in-orbit storage'. It will ultimately bridge the gap between MSG-3 and the first Meteosat Third Generation satellites.

Arianespace chosen to launch MSG-4 weather satellite
Lars Prahm, Director-General of EUMETSAT, and Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chairman & CEO of Arianespace, signed today the launch Service & Solutions contract for the MSG-4 meteorological observation satellite in Kourou, French Guiana, during an informal meeting of European space ministers.
