The night sky is now available in Arabic. As we report today, a flashy new iPhone application from VITO Technology - translated with help from Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque - provides the region's would-be astronomers a hand-held planetarium. Users only need to point their iPhones skyward and the constellations can be identified. An Arabic version of Star Walk, as the app is aptly named, was unveiled this week.

A new host of smartphone applications which map the stars and chart changes in the universe are giving amateur astronomers the chance to be the first to spot new stars and supernovae.
Look up on a really clear night and you can see about 2,000 stars. That sounds a lot, until you realise that there are millions upon millions of stars in the universe.
Two weeks ago scientists spotted a new star and called it "R136a1". They were using the Hubble Space Telescope and the imaginatively-named Very Large Telescope in Chile.
But to explore the wonders of the universe you do not need anything more sophisticated than a decent pair of binoculars or perhaps something like the Meade LX200 telescope.

Title: EZ: A Tool for Automatic Redshift Measurement

We present EZ (Easy redshift), a tool we have developed within the VVDS project to help in redshift measurement from otpical spectra. EZ has been designed with large spectroscopic surveys in mind, and in its development particular care has been given to the reliability of the results obtained in an automatic and unsupervised mode. Nevertheless, the possibility of running it interactively has been preserved, and a graphical user interface for results inspection has been designed. EZ has been successfully used within the VVDS project, as well as the zCosmos one. In this paper we describe its architecture and the algorithms used, and evaluate its performances both on simulated and real data. EZ is an open source program, freely downloadable from this URL

Ed ~ A very nice product; however, the bottom line is that if you have an internet connection, the free WWT software package, or one of the many other free astronomy software packages, are more than adequate for any advanced amateur astronomer - there is no need to purchase this.

Asteroid Watch Widget
JPL's Asteroid Watch Widget tracks asteroids and comets that will make relatively close approaches to Earth. The Widget displays the date of closest approach, approximate object diameter, relative size and distance from Earth for each encounter. The object's name is displayed by hovering over its encounter date. Clicking on the encounter date will display a Web page with details about that object.
