Artist Nancy Holts "Sun Tunnels", were built in 1976, and were designed to be aligned with sunrise and sunset on each solstice, winter and summer. The "Sun Tunnels" consist of four industrial 9 foot concrete tubes punctured with holes in the patterns of the constellations of Draco, Perseus, Columba, and Capricorn, in a remote desert in Utah.
The Roden Crater project is artist James Turrell's most ambitious project and is being constructed in a dormant volcano in the Painted Desert of northern Arizona, northeast of Flagstaff.
Nancy Holt. Sun Tunnels Sun Tunnels is located in the Great Basin Desert outside of the town of Lucin, Utah. The work is a product of Holts interest in the great variation of intensity of the sun in the desert compared to the sun in the city.
