Eutelsat has announced the successful launch of its Hot Bird 9 and W2M satellites from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, by an Ariane 5 ECA rocket. Lift-off of the Ariane 5 ECA rocket carrying the two satellites, an aggregate mass at launch of 8.3 tonnes, was at 19.35 local time in French Guiana (22h35 GMT, 23.35 Paris time) on Saturday, December 20.
The 186th Ariane mission will launch two communications satellites, primarily intended for direct TV broadcast services and data networks: HOT BIRDTM 9 and W2M, both for Eutelsat. This will be the 42nd Ariane 5 launch. The launcher will be carrying a total payload of 9,220 kg, including 8,340 kg for the two satellites, which will be released separately into their targeted orbits. The launch will be from Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) in Kourou, French Guiana. The lift-off is scheduled on the night of December 20, 2008 as soon as possible within the following launch window:

The launch of an Ariane 5 rocket with the HOTBIRD TM-9 and W2M telecoms satellites from the Kourou space center in French Guiana has been rescheduled to between 21:51-22:50 GMT, December 20, 2008. The launch had been planned for 21:35-22:45 GMT, December 10.
Arianespace Flight 186 Set for End November With Eutelsat's HOT BIRD(TM) 9 and W2M Satellites Arianespace and Eutelsat communications confirm that the upcoming launch of the Ariane 5 ECA will orbit Eutelsat's HOT BIRD(TM) 9 and W2M satellites. The launch of Flight 186 is planned to take place in the last week of November and will be the sixth Ariane 5 launch in 2008.
