1820: Royal Observatory established in Cape Town long before Observatory, the suburb in which some of the buildings still stand, filled up with students and healing crystals.

1965: First images of Mars - 21 in total - taken by the Mariner IV spacecraft and received by a satellite tracking facility in Hartebeesthoek.
