Among the historical monuments of Samarkand, the observatory has a particular place; constructed by Ulugbek in 1428-1429 high on one of the hills, at the foot of Chupanat. As Baburs describe, who saw the observatory, it was three-storied, covered with beautiful glazed titles, building of round form 46 metres in diameter, 30 metres in height. In the main hall huge instrument were placed for observations of the Moon, Sun, and other stars in the heavens.
