The second largest national park will be proclaimed on Friday, in the Karas Region. Diamond Area 1 was classified as the "Sperrgebiet" meaning "forbidden area", after diamonds were discovered and mining started in the area. Again past colonial decisions, which were discriminatory and infringing on the rights of indigenous Namibians, appear to be a blessing in disguise today.
Natural heritage sites are the Bogenfels arch and the Roter Kamm meteorite impact crater as well as offshore islands, mostly for seabird management.
