Meade Instruments sold to Chinese telescope company for $5.9 million
Telescope maker Meade Instruments has been sold to affiliates of Chinese manufacturer Ningbo Sunny Electronic Co. for $5.9 million, ending months of speculation over the future of a storied Irvine firm. Ningbo, which makes and sells telescopes, binoculars and other tools, paid $4.50 a share, beating two buyout offers that the company was weighing this year. Read more

("JOC") announced today that Meade and JOC's wholly-owned subsidiary, JOC North America LLC ("JOCNA") and JOCNA's wholly-owned merger subsidiary, have signed a definitive merger agreement for JOCNA to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Meade for approximately $4.5 million or $3.45 per share. Telescope-maker Meade Instruments Corp.'s CEO Steven Muellner has stepped down and has been replaced by former chief executive Steven Murdock. The company said Thursday afternoon that Muellner is pursuing other interests. Murdock has been a director at Meade since 2006.
