Russian Meridian 2 military satellite was put into orbit Friday by a Soyuz-2 carrier rocket launched from Plesetsk space centre in north of the country, an aide to the Russian Space Forces commander said. The Meridian-series communication satellites are designed to replace the older Molniya-series spacecraft and in addition to their military uses provide communication, navigation and surveillance services for civilian customers.
Russia successfully launched and orbited a military communications satellite of the Kosmos series overnight.
"The modernised Soyuz-2 rocket blasted off from the Plesetsk launching site at 01:53 hours Moscow time and successfully placed the payload into the near-Earth orbit" Space Forces spokesman.
The Meridian 2 reconnaissance satellite is scheduled to liftoff atop a Soyouz-2.1 launch vehicle on the 21st May, 21:53:53 GMT from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome. According to a spokesperson for RF Ministry of communications, the strategic communications spacecraft is planned to enter a 12 - hour elliptical orbit with an inclination of ~ 63 degrees.
