Hidden waves pack a big punch

Internal waves, which are prevalent in the oceans as well as in the atmosphere, are hidden from obvious view most of the time. But these colossal phenomena - a single wave can span 1,000 kilometres or more - can have profound effects on Earth's climate as well as on drilling rigs, undersea cables and even vehicles such as submarines and, as those Air Canada passengers and crew can attest, to aircraft in flight.
