Macaulayite is found in the bright red patches of an outcrop of deeply weathered granite located at the eastern end of the Bennachie car park some 7 km WNW of Inverurie, Aberdeenshire (National Grid Reference NJ 682246).

Each year, more than 100,000 visitors take to the slopes of the nine-peak hill, surmounted by the distinctive Mither Tap, one of the most photographed summits in Scotland.
But it was revealed yesterday that a rare rock, found in a disused quarry
at the foot of the hill, may provide a vital clue in uncovering evidence of extraterrestrial life in the universe.

Scientists from space agency Nasa are testing a mineral only found in one corner of Scotland to see if it can provide clues about life on Mars.
Macaulayite is only believed to exist at a quarry at the foot of Bennachie in Aberdeenshire.
Researchers think it could be the same mineral which gives the planet its red colour.
