"If a km-sized NEO is a "rubble pile," it is not impossible to change its orbit by explosive mitigation systems: many low energetic explosions could be used instead of one big explosion, e.g. dividing a 20 Mt impulse into 20 impulses of 1 Mt each. This has to be analysed separately and also applies for impactors. The head of Russia's space agency has called for a massive planetary effort to deflect a massive asteroid as it skips by Earth in 2029.

"People's lives are at stake. We should pay several hundred million dollars and build a system that would allow us to prevent a collision, rather than sit and wait for it to happen and kill hundreds of thousands of people" - Anatoly Perminov.

Russia may send spacecraft to knock away asteroid
