Russia Sunday launched two telecommunications satellites --Luch-5A and Amos-5 -- from the Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan. A Proton rocket with a Breeze-M upper stage is scheduled to launch the Amos 5 satellite, and Luch 5A satellite, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, at 11:17 GMT, 11th December, 2011.
Scheduled to begin service in 2011 at 17°E - a new orbital slot over Africa - the AMOS-5 satellite will position Spacecom at the forefront of Africa's emerging satellite services market. Once in orbit, the AMOS-5 satellite will feature a fixed pan-African C-band beam and three steerable Ku-band beams - all covering Africa with connectivity to Europe and the Middle East and supporting multiple transponders in both C-band and Ku-band. Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) and Space Communication Ltd. (Spacecom) of Ramat-Gan Israel, operator of the AMOS satellite fleet, have signed an agreement for launch of a communication satellite aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 as early as December 2012. Falcon 9 will insert the satellite into a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO), adding to Spacecoms existing satellite fleet. Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd.
