Professor Bill McGuire (Aon Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre) discusses the eruption of the Eyjafjöll volcano in Iceland, which has sent a huge cloud of ash toward the UK and disrupted air traffic.

"The 1600m high Eyjafjöll volcano (also known as Eyjafjallajökull) is located in southern Iceland, immediately west of Katla volcano. Eyjafjöll is an elongated, ice-covered volcano topped by a 2.5km-wide summit caldera. The volcano appears to have been relatively inactive over the last 10,000 years, and the sole historical eruption, prior to this year, occurred in 1821."

A volcanic eruption in Iceland, which has thrown up a 6 km high cloud of ash and disrupted air traffic in northern Europe, has grown more intense, an expert said on Thursday.
The eruption under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier -- 10 times more powerful than another one nearby last month -- showed no sign of abating after more than 24 hours of activity, University of Iceland volcanologist Armannn Hoskuldsson said.

Air passengers can expect to face significant disruption today after the UK's air traffic control service closed its airspace due to an ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland. Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports have been closed. Belfast International and Belfast City airports have also been affected.
A number of flights from Irish to British and some continental destinations have been cancelled.

All flights to and from Scotland's airports have been grounded as a plume of volcanic ash drifts across much of northern Europe.
Dust from the eruption in Iceland presents a serious risk to aircraft.
Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports have been shut and five EasyJet flights due to depart from Stansted Airport were cancelled.

A volcanic eruption in southern Iceland spewed black smoke and white steam into the air on Wednesday and partially melted a glacier, forcing hundreds to evacuate from the thinly populated area.
