You would expect conservationists to be thrilled by the decision to designate the Chagos Islands the largest fully protected marine park in the world. They are not. The project hinges on the notion that what makes the archipelago special is its lack of habitation - but the Chagos Islands are neither uninhabited nor indisputed; they are the subject of a bitter, continuing court battle over who has the right to live there.
