Suny New Paltz's new astronomy program is a case in point. Beginning Wednesday evening, the college will officially open the Muriel and Jack Smolen Observatory, the place students as well as community residents will get an up-close look at the night sky.
The observatory was funded from a bequest from Muriel Smolen, whose husband was an avid astronomer.
