Even after Cyclone Laila weakened ahead of landfall, about 30km from Bapatla in Guntur district, on Thursday afternoon, it left 16 people dead, flooding thousands of homes, snapping power in many areas and throwing rail and road traffic out of gear in the coastal region of the state.

Forecasters on Thursday said cyclone 'Laila' has weakened but the danger was not over yet as there were signs of it re-emerging in northern Bay of Bengal over the weekend after wreaking havoc in coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Cyclone Laila expected to hit south India soon

A cyclonic storm is heading towards the coastal areas of India's southern Andhra Pradesh state, officials say.
Cyclone Laila is expected to hit the state from the Bay of Bengal in a few hours. More than 50,000 people have been evacuated to safer places.

Nearly 30,000 people were evacuated today from low-lying areas in coastal Andhra Pradesh as cyclone Laila packing wind speed of 125 kmph is said to slam the state as also Tamil Nadu where heavy rains and gales threw normal life out of gear.
