First Iridium NEXT Hosted Payload Agreement Signed

Iridium Communications Inc. today announced that Orbital Sciences Corporation, Dulles, Va., has signed an agreement with Iridium that reserves hosted payload capacity on Iridium's next-generation satellite constellation, Iridium NEXT.
Under the terms of the agreement, Orbital will make several non-refundable deposits totalling $10 million in 2011 for a right-of-first refusal on 20 percent of the network's capacity to host third-party payloads. The parties also have agreed to the basic terms of Orbital purchasing this hosted payload capacity on behalf of its customers. Iridium believes the arrangement with Orbital has the potential to be worth more than $100 million, including hosting fees and recurring data service fees once in orbit.

Next-generation Iridium to launch on SpaceX Falcon 9

The Iridium satphone company will use the Falcon 9 rocket to launch many of its replacement spacecraft.
The US firm recently announced a $2.9bn project to upgrade its network of 66 operational satellites from 2015.
It has now contracted SpaceX to use its brand new Falcon vehicle to put the Iridium Next constellation in orbit.

Huge order for Iridium spacecraft

The mobile satellite services provider Iridium has ordered 81 spacecraft to upgrade its global network.
Thales Alenia Space of France will build the satellites - 66 to form the operational constellation, the remainder to act as spares.
The order makes the Iridium Next venture the biggest commercial space project in the world today.
