A strong magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred at 06:12:36 (UTC) on Sunday, March 14, 2011, off the East coast of Honshu, 153 km ESE of Sendai, Honshu, at a depth of 14.9 km.

Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan
11 March 2011, 15:27 CET - last update on 13 March 2011, 18:10 CET

An earthquake of magnitude 8.8 hit north-east Japan followed by a series of powerful aftershocks and Tsunamis. The epicentre of the earthquake is located 400 km away from the capital Tokyo at a depth of 32 km. The earthquake occurred at 14:46 local time (05:46 GMT) on March 11. The areas most affected are the prefectures of Miyagi, Fukushima, and Iwate. The town of Sendai was severely affected and a tsunami of more than 10 m height hit the coastline.

The town of Minamisanriku was completely devastated by the earthquake and tsunami which hit Japan on Friday and half the town's 17,000-strong population are still missing.
Alastair Leithead spoke to some of those residents who managed to flee the small port before the wave hit.

Two days after a devastating earthquake and then tsunami in Japan, residents in the coastal city of Sendai are trying to come to terms with what has happened.
The port, in the prefecture of Miyagi, was in one the worst-hit areas and is down the coast from quake-damaged Fukushima power station, where nuclear meltdown is feared.
Britons living there told BBC News that a major concern for residents at the moment is finding food and fuel.

Geologist are expecting a magnitude 8.0 aftershock.


Monster aftershock could strike within days

North-eastern Japan can expect another monster earthquake large enough to trigger a tsunami within days, the head of the Australian Seismological Centre says.
The director, Kevin McCue, said there had been more than 100 smaller quakes since Friday, but a larger aftershock was likely.

Newly emerged footage shows the force at which the tsunami struck Japan's coast.
In the fishing port of Miyako, in Iwate prefecture, boats were overturned, while video from Kamaishi city shows cars being dragged down city streets by the water.

The extent of inundation from the destructive and deadly tsunami triggered by the March 11, 2011, magnitude 8.9 earthquake centred off Japan's northeastern coast about 130 kilometres east of the city of Sendai is revealed in this before-and-after image pair from the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument on NASA's Terra spacecraft.
