The discovery of an extinct underwater volcano 100 nautical miles off South Australia's Far West coast has excited scientists who came across it by chance.

Scientists from the South Australian Research and Development Institute and university students were aboard CSIRO marine's RV Southern Surveyor when they realised the flat and featureless seafloor that should have been underneath them, was in fact a cone shaped volcano.
