The sun: That great inferno in the sky. We can't really live without it. Through the ages, that bright burning disc has been worshipped as a god, and had human sacrifices dedicated to it and monuments built in honour of it. For a couple of millennia, it was even thought to be the center of the universe. Over time, fear, veneration and mystery gave way to study, understanding and knowledge. Today, we know that our sun is the largest nuclear reactor in our vicinity, complete with flares, coronal mass ejections, twisting magnetic fields and even a solar wind. Superstition has given way to science. Proof of all this can be found at one of the premiere heliocentric laboratories in the world, the National Solar Observatory, which just happens to be conveniently located just a couple hours east of Las Cruces, in the Sacramento Mountains. All science aside, however, there's nothing quite like a relaxing day trip to the cool pines, where a visit to Cloudcroft can be the launchpad for explorations of the aesthetic, meditative or even the cerebral kind.
