Meteor boom shakes Raglan

Stardome Observatory astronomer Grant Christie estimated that the fireball travelled 30km to 80km above land, before reportedly splitting into three pieces out at sea.

A meteor exploded 80 kilometres above Auckland last night, giving a dramatic light and sound show for those lucky enough to see it.
It was seen over a wide area of the North Island but most prominently in Auckland.

The Carter Observatory is asking people who saw lights in the sky overnight on Tuesday to log their sighting to help determine whether it was a meteor or space junk.
The Wellington observatory has received a large number of reports from Auckland to the lower North Island of a display of green, white, orange and yellow lights just after 11pm on Tuesday.

Large meteor seen across NZ

A meteor spotted last night in the sky over New Zealand could have been the size of a desk.
Reports of a bright flashing light in the sky about 11pm were received from Auckland to as far south as Wellington while a sonic boom was heard by many people near Raglan.
