The comet was discovered on the 15th November, 1906, by Joel Hastings Metcalf. The comet was then lost and rediscovered by Howard J. Brewington on the 7th January, 1991. The name includes the names of the two discoverers. Comet 97P/Metcalf-Brewington has elliptical orbit with an eccentricity of 0.45. The perihelion is 2.61 AU and aphelion is 6.99 AU from the Sun. The orbital period is 10.52 years with an inclination to the ecliptic of 17.98.
