A Russian RS-18 intercontinental ballistic missile (NATO name Stilet), which was launched from the Baikonur Space Centre, has hit its target, according to the Russian Defence Ministry. The missile was launched at 07:30 GMT (11:30 a.m. Moscow time) toward the Kura test range in Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.
"The launch was conducted in accordance with a Russian Armed Forces training plan to extend the missile's service life" - Defence ministry statement.
The RS-18 missile was put into service in 1975 with an improved modification in 1980. RS-18 missiles are considered to be very reliable, as proven by numerous test launches. About 160 Stilet missiles are currently in operation in the Russian Strategic Missile Force. Each missile carries six warheads.
