Dark cloud hangs over atomic test

At 8am on October 3, 1952, an atomic bomb - as big as the one that had destroyed the Japanese city of Nagasaki seven years earlier - was detonated about 100km off WA's Pilbara coast.
The mushroom cloud from the detonation rose 4.5km from a bay in the middle of the isolated and uninhabited Montebello Islands.

Operation Hurricane was the test of the first British atomic device on 3 October 1952. A plutonium implosion device was detonated in the lagoon between the Montebello Islands, Western Australia.
