ESA selects Astrium to build Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite
Furthering Europe's capacity to monitor atmospheric pollution, ESA has awarded a contract worth Euro 45.5 million to Astrium UK to act as prime contractor for the Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite system. Scheduled to be launched in 2015, Sentinel-5 Precursor (Sentinel-5P) will be the first satellite dedicated to monitoring atmospheric chemistry for the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programme. British industry has been contracted to build a major European satellite to monitor atmospheric composition. Known as Sentinel 5 Precursor (S5P), the spacecraft will track a range of chemical species, from protective gases such stratospheric ozone to damaging pollutants like sulphur dioxide. Read more
