Rock hunters flock to Rockhaven

The area has been inundated with "rock hunters" from across Saskatchewan, Alberta and the United States since a brilliant flash of light and a strange noise was noticed last week more than 50 kilometres in all directions. Officials in the rural municipality in nearby Cut Knife say area maps are in hot demand. At least one man claims to have found a palm-sized rock and is considering selling it.

Found on a county road north of Rockhaven hamlet.
 I'm keeping the smaller one, but the bigger one is for sale.  Price/gram negotiable.

Ed ~ these are, as yet, unauthenticated stones and worthless; but potentially they could fetch a lot, possibly 10-20 dollars per gram.

Man claims meteorite find
 
A man claims to have found the first known meteorites from a fireball that lit up the sky over Saskatchewan and Alberta Tuesday night.
A posting on Kijiji shows two roundish and blackened rocks a man says he found on the side of a highway north of Rockhaven. One of the rocks is listed for sale for an unspecified price and the other rock is shown suspended by a magnet.
When contacted by The StarPhoenix, the man behind the Kijiji ad was not willing to have his name or photograph in the paper.

The space rock could have weighed more than 100 kilograms before it broke up, said Alan Hildebrand of the University of Calgary.
The professor of geophysics said he believes it landed somewhere near Rockhaven, Sask., southwest of North Battleford.

Possible Meteor dropzone near North Battleford

If the experts' calculations are correct, the tiny settlement of Rockhaven could be the most aptly named in the province.
According to calculations by geoscientist Alan Hildebrand of the University of Calgary - also co-ordinator of the Canadian Fireball Reporting Centre - a meteor that streaked across the Saskatchewan sky Tuesday night likely came to rest near Rockhaven, which is about 40 kilometres southwest of North Battleford.

It was an incredible sight for anyone lucky enough to catch a fleeting glimpse Tuesday night of a very bright light that streaked across the sky above Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Witnesses went on Twitter to report a multi-hued flash between Lloydminster and Saskatoon that lasted just seconds.

Large Fireball Seen Over Saskatchewan, Calgary, Alberta in Canada


Social media was abuzz about what appeared to be a meteor shooting over the city Tuesday night, with sightings also reported from Edmonton and parts of Saskatchewan. One reader told the Herald she saw the bright green fireball northeast of Cochrane shortly before 9 p.m. followed by a sparking tail of yellow and orange.
