This is the largest Meteorite that has been known to have fallen in North America. When it struck it buried itself 15 feet in the ground. Portions of the meteorite are on display in the Estherville Public Library, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria.

On May 10, 1879, a 455 pound meteorite fell to earth in Emmet County a few miles north of Estherville, and has become known as the Estherville Meteorite. When it struck it buried itself 15 feet in the ground. Portions of the meteorite are on display in the Estherville Public Library, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria.

Jensens initiate plan for Meteorite Centre

Most Estherville residents know about the meteor that crashed to earth north of town in 1879.
Bob and Lili Jensen of Estherville want all visitors to know about the meteor with the creation of a Meteorite Centre.
Bob Jensen, owner of American Family Insurance Agency on Central Avenue, also owns the building to the east and the vacant area on the southwest corner of Central Avenue and Highway 4.

Estherville meteorite

The Estherville (Mesosiderite-A3/4) meteorite fell in Iowa, USA, on the 10th May, 1879.
A total mass of 320 kg was recovered.
