Baghdad is the capital of the Republic of Iraq, as well as the coterminous Baghdad Province.
On 30 July 762 the caliph Al Mansur commissioned the construction of the city and it was built under the supervision of the Barmakids. Mansur believed that Baghdad was the perfect city to be the capital of the Islamic empire under the Abbasids.
