The Panama Canal (Spanish: Canal de Panamá) is an 82-kilometre ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade.
The canal was formally opened on August 15, 1914 with the passage of the cargo ship SS Ancon.
