Exploding meteor in sky over Somerset was 'a beautiful sight'

Somerset residents have spoken of their shock at seeing a meteor explode in the sky on Monday night.
The spectacular explosion took place at around 11pm over South Wales and caused a sonic boom that shook windows and set off car alarms.

Cwmbran Big Bang heard as far away as Shropshire

The Cwmbran Big Bang was heard across South Wales and beyond.
The golf ball-sized meteorite, known as a 'bolide', was travelling faster than a bullet fired from a gun and disintegrated over Cwmbran on Monday night.

Hundreds witness meteor shooting across skies of Greater Manchester

A mystery 'fireball' spotted in the skies above Manchester on Monday night was a meteor, experts have said.
The bright object was seen to shoot across the atmosphere before disappearing just seconds later behind the clouds.
Hundreds of people witnessed the phenomenon at around 11.10pm on Monday night.

Big late-night boom shakes homes in south Wales

A loud late-night bang and flash of light has alarmed people across parts of south Wales and western England.
Some reported hearing a large airborne "explosion" that shook their homes some time after 23:00 BST on Monday.

A meteor has exploded above Wales causing a sonic boom which shook windows and set off car alarms.
Hundreds of people saw the fireball shoot across the night sky before exploding near their homes.
Sleeping children were woken by a "sonic boom" created as the golf ball sized meteor exploded above South Wales.

Astronomer says meteorites are commonplace

Dr Chris North, of Cardiff University's school of Physics and Astronomy, said the bright light you see when you spot a shooting star or meteor shower, is caused by immensely hot air being created just in front of the rubble because the speed the rubble is travelling at. Even though the atmosphere generally protects us from meteor strikes some maintain much of their speed, with on some occasions the meteor getting so hot it explodes creating a large bang.

Meteorite 'size of golf ball' believed to have exploded over South Wales

A meteorite the size of a golf ball exploded over South Wales last night, according to reports.
At around 11.10pm, people across the UK reported seeing a bright light travelling across the skies which allegedly exploded near Cwmbran.
