NASA, Partners Reveal California Meteorite's Rough and Tumble Journey
A meteorite that fell onto the roof of a house in Novato, California, on Oct. 17, 2012, has revealed a detailed picture of its origin and tumultuous journey through space and Earth's atmosphere. An international consortium of fifty researchers studied the fallen meteorite and published their findings in the August issue of the journal Meteoritics and Planetary Science. Read more
The Novato meteorite (name pending) is an ordinary chondrite which entered the earth's atmosphere and broke up at 19:44 Pacific time on 17 October 2012. The fireball created sonic booms and fragmented. Read more
About 40 people showed at a special meteorite identification workshop - go ahead and call it a space rock geekfest - Saturday at the Presbyterian Church of Novato. Although the featured "rock star" was Dr. Peter Jenniskens of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, one of the pre-eminent meteor tracking astronomers in the world, he was trumped by a local hero, NASA astronaut Dr. Yvonne Cagle. Two more meteorites found in Novato from October meteor shower
Two more pieces of the fireball that exploded over the Bay Area in mid-October have been found, bringing the total of meteorite fragments found to four -- all in Novato.
"The second one (Cook's find) was found two miles southeast of the Webbers' house. Then pretty much north by two miles of that find is the other two" - Robert Verish

An oblong airship sailing above Sonoma County this weekend was the zeppelin Eureka, which returned to the area for tours of the Russian River valley and Wine Country. The Eureka returned to Sonoma County on Friday, bringing aboard a scientist hoping to spot evidence of a meteor shower that exploded over the the North Bay on Oct. 17. Read more
When Lisa Webber heard a thump on her roof the night of October 17, 2012, she had no idea a meteorite was the cause. It wasn't until she read an article in the San Francisco Chronicle describing the NASA/CAMS project's prediction that Novato was a meteor's possible impact center, that she realised there may be a space rock in her back yard. Indeed, when she scoured her yard, she found a rock with light and dark regions, weighing 63 grams, and responding to magnets. Read more
