Poland to host WW2 commemoration with Gdansk ceremony
European leaders are due to gather in the Polish port of Gdansk to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe. A midnight ceremony is to be held at nearby Westerplatte, where the first shots of the war were fired. Read more
Great George tolls to mark 70th anniversary of VE Day

The German Instrument of Surrender ended World War II in Europe. It was signed by representatives of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW) and the Allied Expeditionary Force together with the Soviet High Command, French representative signing as witness on 7 May, and signed again by representatives of the three armed services of the OKW and the Allied Expeditionary Force together with the Supreme High Command of the Red Army, French and US representatives signing as on 8 May 1945.
